On the one-year anniversary of her tragic death, Shannen Doherty‘s friends and costars are remembering the actress.
The star of beloved series like Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmedas well as films like Heathers and Goods, died on July 132024 at the age of 53. Doherty had been diagnosed with breast cancer nearly a decade prior, and her battle against the disease largely took her out of the spotlight. But a year on, Doherty’s memory burns as brightly as ever in the minds of her Hollywood compatriots.
Though they never appeared in a television series or film alongside one another, Doherty and Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a 30-year friendship. On Sunday, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star shared a video compilation of images showcasing the pair cherishing each other’s company throughout the years, set to “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. Gellar left only a broken-hearted emoji as a caption.
Gellar was a constant presence in Doherty’s life following her diagnosis, with the pair frequently sharing videos of their time together to their social media accounts.
“She’s amazing,” Gellar said of Doherty in 2020. “It’s funny, my husband (Freddie Prinze Jr.) always says that you always learn better from your friends than your spouse. He’s this amazing chef, but I never learned from him, because I get so nervous and frustrated and he gets frustrated with me. I’ve learned so many recipes from Shannen during quarantine, because she’s much more patient with me in the kitchen.”
Doherty was also mourned Sunday by Rose McGowanwho replaced her as the third Halliwell sister on Charmed after Doherty was fired following the third season finale in 2001.
“You are missed,” McGowan wrote over a photograph of Doherty posted to her Instagram stories. Though McGowan and Doherty never crossed paths on Charmedthey did share the screen a decade earlier, in Gregg Araki‘s apocalyptic dramedy Nowherein which Doherty, McGowan, and Cry Baby star Traci Lords appeared as the superficial, color-blocked “Valley Chicks.”

A month after Doherty’s death, McGowan opened up about stepping into the big shoes she left behind on Charmedand later bonding over their “difficult” reputations in Hollywood.
“At the time I joined Charmed I did not understand the backstory… I was just told she was fired and nobody talked about her,” she reflected. “I was very famous at that point, but I was persona non grata, non-hirable. I caused disruptions everywhere I went. This is something that Shannen (and I) later talked about that she related to: the weight of what it’s like to have the media machine lie about you.”

Doherty’s greatest friend on the Charmed set was Holly Marie Combswho played her younger sister Piper Halliwell across the series full, eight-season run.
Last week, after the death of Julian McMahonCombs posted a video featuring photos of Doherty together with the actor, who appeared on four seasons of the series as a primary love interest to the other Halliwell sister, Paige (Alyssa Milan).
“One of a kind is an understatement,” Combs wrote. “Your unyielding zest for life and crazy making sense of humor will be sorely missed. The joy and laughter you were the direct cause of will always be remembered. I hope you find our lady friend and dance in those rose petals.”
Doherty’s Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Tori Spelling offered a poem on grief and power to her late friend on Instagram with a caption that started “It’s been a year.”
“You always told me to stop apologizing for myself/To stop playing small/To stop trying to be palatable when I was born to be powerful,” Spelling wrote, closing with “stay wild. stay rebellious. your power is your cause.”
