Anne Hathaway is no stranger to the intermingling of fashion and film. Our August cover star underwent a makeover for the ages in The Princess Diaries and cut her teeth in the fictional fashion closet in The Devil Wears Prada. Next, she will take on the role of a fashion designer’s (Michaela Coel) pop star muse in the forthcoming Mother Mary, and reprise the role of Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
But not since her cerulean sweater days has Hathaway herself been a subject of a fashion emergency. So when Bowen Yang stepped in for an intervention in the Vogue closet, Hathaway was a bit taken aback. “You’re normal. You blend in. You’re classic and put-together, like maybe you know how to negotiate at upscale antique markets!” Yang cries, gesturing to Hathaway’s oversized, double-breasted blazer. “I want to look good, subtly,” Hathaway perries. But Yang delivers the final blow: “You’re not put on this earth to give middle management!”
Indeed she is not. Thus, Hathaway and Yang set out on a fashion extravaganza—from Trompe l’oeil Thom Browne to sparkly, sculptural Marc Jacobs. “I feel like my own personal disco ball,” she says. Cue a Charli XCX dance break.
Watch on as Anne Hathaway transforms into a full-on “Fashion Beast”—with a little help from Bowen Yang.
